A four year history of AREA, a nightclub in a 13,000-square-foot warehouse at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel. The club opened with an invitation sent out as a blue pill in a velvet box that you dissolved in hot water to get the party details. Every six weeks AREA would be gutted and redesigned around a new theme, from “Future” to “Gnarly” to “Suburbia" and more. Regulars included Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, Keith Haring, Grace Jones, Robert Mapplethorpe and Andy Warhol.
