Daniel Miller started Mute Records to release his debut single "T.V.O.D."/"Warm Leatherette." The label went on to represent a community of artists that included Depeche Mode, New Order, Fad Gadget, Moby, Can, Nick Cave, Yeasayer, The Bad Seeds, Einstürzende Neubauten, Yazoo, Erasure, Laibach, Goldfrapp, M83, Liars and Ben Frost.

The book draws from the Mute Archives to tell the history of the label through album covers, photography, conceptual artworks, rare ephemera, interviews and personal anecdotes.
